Decorating with metals

Metal is not such a conventional material, but it is widely used in the furnishing of kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms, often combined with other materials and furniture.
Metals are often used in the manufacture of lamps and interior decoration, above all in perforated metal sheets form. Sanded, lacquered or painted, they can be cleaned with simple soap and warm water.
Here are the most common types of metal used in home decor.
Mild Steel
Mild steel is an alloy of iron and carbon commonly called “iron”, often used as a square tubel. It can be bent, welded and must be protected from rust.
It is usually protected by painting, lacquering, varnishing, enameling, nickel plating, or chrome plating it.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, nickel and chromium . It is harder than iron and its implementation is therefore more difficult, and even his welding. The surface of steel does not require any protection instead. His finish, brushed, polished or honed makes it beautiful.
Aluminum
Aluminum is a lightweight metal that once polished is sparkling. It is malleable, ductile and easily modeled. It is increasingly being used in the furniture industry in the form of extruded profiles that support to elements of furniture. It is also used to decorate surfaces. Aluminum can be brushed, polished and its adonizig protection, very solid, has the advantage that it can be colored.
Copper
Copper is very ductile and malleable and it is used for pipes and hot water circuits. It does not have the disadvantages of lead but it costs more than plastic.
Brass
Brass, a copper and zinc alloy more ductile and malleable than iron, is used frequently. You can polish, easily weld and then use for very delicate precision works . You can easily decorate it.

How to reduce ship’s weight

A research of the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology of Chemnitz in Germany, reveals that an aluminum powder has been tested which can probably replace the steel plates of vessels in order to reduce even up to 30% their weight.
This means that for a medium cargo ship of 7,000 m3 , there would be a reduction of its weight of more than 1,000 tons.
The experiment is part of a research project known as Community CREATING, established to strengthen the position of domestic shipments.
The end result then, is represented by a metal powder made of hybrid aluminum and titanium lighter than water, which becomes a foam when heated and becomes very rigid when subjected to extreme pressure. With this compound large multilayer plates could be made with aluminum foam, thus replacing the steel sheets. This will provide a great revolution for the sea transportation sector.

Valve World Expo 2010

Today is the last day for Valve World Expo, the international exhibition held in Düsseldorf, which started last 30th November on the fairgrounds next to the Rhine.
More than 500 exhibitors from 35 countries are participating, covering over  13.200 square meters of surface.
Exhibitors from all over the world are presenting their newest technologies and techniques from the valve sector, like for example the new sequence valves and check valves.
International visitors and experts have come to visit the fair: professionals from different fields like the offshore and marine industry, the automobile and food industry, and chemical and mechanical industry too.
Organizers have already fixed the new date for 2012, which will take place next November 27th -29th, 2012.

Plastic and recycling

Plastic can be divided into several types. according to the different chemical characteristics and uses. Its different names, with abbreviations, are the ones written on plastic bottles :
- Polyethylene terephthalate, commonly called PET, used for plastic bottles for  liquid food and drinks.
- Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, used for duct tape, electrical wires, bottles, pipes and flange protections.
- Polypropylene, also known as PP, used for syringes and pens production
- Polyethylene, i.e. PE, which is the one used for all kinds of bags: shopping, garbage and food bags.
Despite plastic is made of petrol, hopefully it can be recycled. But we must pay attention when recycling it, since there are a few elements to keep in mind.
First of all, generally in your recycling bin, you can put bottles and plastic items with PET, PVC and PE symbols.
On the other hand, you shouldn’t put plastic dishes, glasses, bags,  and all those items which have been contaminated with food, oils, toxic dyes even if it’s a recyclable plastic.

How to increase plastics recycling

European Federation for plastics recyclers (EuPR) has just published  a Decalogue of actions to consider in order to increase plastics recycling.
Here below are the 10 points considered as fundamental to this purpose:
1) monitoring by national systems of waste collect and their harmonization on a European level;
2)ending the use on non-sustainable technologies, among which bioplastics and  oxodegradable: creating separated collection chains for these materials;
3)foreseeing specific objectives for mechanical recycling ;
4)limiting plastic waste exportation to favor European recyclers supplying.
5)creating a tax system propitious to European industry of recycling;
6)offering recyclers solutions to obtain REACH response, through the cooperation and support of the whole chain:
7)eliminating discriminating laws or unreachable standards for recycled materials;
8)
incrementing the Green Public Procurement and foreseeing a minimum level of recycled materials for eco-labels;
9)introducing economical incentives for recycled materials
10)strengthening the communication and co-operation inside the whole chain of plastic material.

Opportunities offered by laser cutting

The use of laser in cutting technology gives interesting chances both to the industrial designer (during the product planning step) and to the process technician (during the production planning step). So it’s important that these two professionals work in contact with each other in order to  catch all the advantages coming from the use of laser.
The wide range of thickness and working materials, together with a great flexibility and high precision, these are the main strengths of  laser application. Moreover there are planning advantages depending on the possibility to cut both simple (plane surfaces)  and more complicated sheet metal shapes (bended surfaces or even prism shaped pipes). Thanks to the process simplicity, it’s possible to cut different shapes with low costs, which allows to plan a mechanical system using a wide range of plane and bended shapes. Laser cutting (and Laser Cutting 2d in particular) is perfect to obtain prototypes or small series, with no big expense.
